Smokies in the Fall

About the Painting:

Name: Smokies in the Fall

Medium: Artist Watercolors on Arches 140# paper

Size: 5×7″

I went through the Smokies in the Fall on the way to a week long art workshop.  I stopped at one of the overlooks and took some photos.  This is a painting from one of those photos.  The Fall colors were breathtaking.

My process:  The complete painting was painted from the rear and coming forwards.  I started with a sky wash, then distant mountains, then closer mountains, etc.  The trees and foreground grasses were placed last.  Colors used were Quin. Burnt Scarlet, New Gamboge, Thalo Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cad. Red, Raw Sienna, and Burnt Umber.

Savannah River Walk

About the Painting:

Name: Savannah River Walk

Medium: Watercolor and Gouache on Arches 140# watercolor paper

Size: 5×7″

I visited Savannah, GA a couple of years ago with my family.  We loved the River Walk and could have spent several days there.   I love the colorful trolley buses and knew I had to include one in a painting.

In this painting I started with a light underwash all over, using a very light lavender mother color.  I then painted the buildings, leaving holes for the windows and doors so that the underpainting would show through.  I added my bright colors for the awnings, unbrellas, flags and trolley.  I finished with a small amount of opaque gouache, highlighting the umbrellas and top of the trolley.
