Gunner and Duke

About the Painting:
Watercolor on Arches 140# Cold Press paper
Size: 15×11″
I have not been able to post recently due to my computer crashing. I am still without my desktop, but today I have access to a laptop and decided to try to get on and let people know why they are not seeing paintings posted every other day. This is a larger painting I completed this year for a client It is of their two beloved hunting dogs, Gunner and Duke. One is a spunky younger pup along side the older, wiser one. They were fun to paint. I’m sorry this text isn’t coming out any better than it is, but for some reason, this laptop’s setup is preventing me from doing much with my post. Hope you enjoy this painting and I really hope to get back to regular posts soon.
Thanks for viewing!

Poppin’ Peppa’
Posted by Judy Moore Mudd | Filed under Still Life
An original watercolor, produced with highest quality watercolor pigments on Arches professional, archival paper.
Size: Approx. 6×10″
I named this painting due to the pepper “popping” off of the paper with it’s vivid color. Thanks for viewing. Your comments are always welcome!
Irresistible Iris
Posted by Judy Moore Mudd | Filed under Floral-Garden
An original watercolor painting produced with highest quality watercolor pigments on Arches professional, archival paper.
Size: 10×8″
The iris reference material for this painting is the same that I used for “Purple Iris” however it looks quite different. For this painting, I changed the color scheme completely, added leaves and a flower bud, and made a solid dark background to pop the flower forward. I enjoy seeing how many different paintings I can make from one subject, so who knows what will be next! Thanks for viewing! Comments are welcome!
Pink Peony

Medium: An Original Watercolor on Arches 140# paper
Size: 8×10″
This photo doesn’t do the painting justice. Even with adjustments in Photoshop, the painting has richer colors and more detail. I thought doing this painting would drive me crazy, but I actually enjoyed the many petals! This is one of my favorites and I hope to do many more like it. I already have a request from my daughter! Oh, boy…

Pear Trio
Posted by Judy Moore Mudd | Filed under Still Life
Medium: Highest Quality Watercolor pigments on Arches 140# professional paper
Size: Approx. 8×10″
This is another still life from my class last week. Again, to get the dark shadows, I had to use the 500 watt bulb in a photographer’s lamp. I left the sticker on the pear because I think it adds interest. But, I would be interested in what you think. Should I leave stickers in the painting or keep it clean and simple? Please leave your comments!

Pepper and Leeks

About the Painting:
Medium: Watercolor on Arches 140# professional paper
Size: Approx. 8×10″
In my beginners class last week, I set up a still life for my students to paint. It was actually fairly large with a basket and numerous vegetables. These were sitting to the side of the basket and made a well designed painting all by themselves. In setting up a still life to paint, you need to have a good strong light source. In this case, because the room is so light from surrounding windows, I used a 500 watt bulb in a photographer’s lamp to get the strong shading needed for definition. Sadie Shitzu Puppy
Posted by Judy Moore Mudd | Filed under Animals
An original painting, watercolor and gouache on Arches 140# professional paper.
Size: Approx. 7 1/4 x 5″
We had a Shitzu named Sadie. She was a tiny thing–the runt of the litter. She was sweet as she could be, but prissy and stubborn! She’s been gone a few years but we still miss her. This was when she was younger, but we kept her in a “puppy cut” even when she was fully grown so she always looked like a pup.
My process: I started with her ears–at the top with Raw Sienna, Raw Umber and down to Peach Black at the bottom of her ears. I moved to her eyes, layering again, to get a translucent quality to her eyes. Her nose was always shiny, too, so I layered the paint, then used a wet brush to soften the top and bottom of her nose. The rest is pretty self-explanatory, finished her fur on her back, then used Thalo Blue and Raw Sienna to put her shadows in–around her eyes and underneath her belly. To finish, I used white gouache to make her long lashes and white fur, then added a little gray to the white to highlight her darker fur. Here is a detail photo of her eyes:

Ripening (Tomatoes)
Posted by Judy Moore Mudd | Filed under Still Life
Name: Ripening
Medium: Watercolor on Arches 140# professional paper
Size: Approx. 5×7″
I love the red in these tomatoes. I wish I could say I grew them, but I get tomatoes up at our local market and sit them in the window until they are good and ripe.
The tomatoes were painted with multiple layers of Quin. Gold, Vermillion, and Perm Rose. The darkened areas were painted with Winsor Purple. The shadows were painted with Cobalt Blue and Winsor Purple with touches of Vermillion.
