An original watercolor, produced with highest quality watercolor pigments on Arches professional, archival paper.

I named this painting due to the pepper “popping” off of the paper with it’s vivid color. Thanks for viewing. Your comments are always welcome!
Pear Trio

Size: Approx. 8×10″
This is another still life from my class last week. Again, to get the dark shadows, I had to use the 500 watt bulb in a photographer’s lamp. I left the sticker on the pear because I think it adds interest. But, I would be interested in what you think. Should I leave stickers in the painting or keep it clean and simple? Please leave your comments!

Pepper and Leeks

About the Painting:
Medium: Watercolor on Arches 140# professional paper
Size: Approx. 8×10″
In my beginners class last week, I set up a still life for my students to paint. It was actually fairly large with a basket and numerous vegetables. These were sitting to the side of the basket and made a well designed painting all by themselves. In setting up a still life to paint, you need to have a good strong light source. In this case, because the room is so light from surrounding windows, I used a 500 watt bulb in a photographer’s lamp to get the strong shading needed for definition. Name: Ripening
Medium: Watercolor on Arches 140# professional paper
Size: Approx. 5×7″
I love the red in these tomatoes. I wish I could say I grew them, but I get tomatoes up at our local market and sit them in the window until they are good and ripe.
The tomatoes were painted with multiple layers of Quin. Gold, Vermillion, and Perm Rose. The darkened areas were painted with Winsor Purple. The shadows were painted with Cobalt Blue and Winsor Purple with touches of Vermillion.

I love bright colors and these mangos were just what I was looking for. A great sale at my local grocer and I had my mangoes dancing!
Colors used for this painting were Vermillion, Quin. Rose, Green Gold, Winsor Violet, New Gamboge, Prussian Blue and Peach Black. The background was almost solid paint–peach black, winsor violet and prussian blue combined. This was fun! As always, your comments are welcome!

Name: Three Strawberries
Medium: Watercolor on Arches 140# professional paper
Size: 5×7″
It’s strawberry season in Kentucky and I couldn’t resist painting a few!
My process: I used frisket on the seeds before starting. Then painted the body of the strawberries in one step, going from yellowish to dark red. I painted the leaves and stems, removed the frisket and finished the seeds. Colors used in this painting: Vermilion, Alizarin Crimson, New Gamboge, Green Gold, Aureolin, and Thalo Blue.

Pair O’ Pear

Name: Pair O’ Pear
Medium: Watercolor on Arches 140# paper
Size: 5×7″
My Process: I love the shape of pears. I think they remind me of people–their shape and tilt, seems like they are always in a conversation. With these, I used the multiple glaze process starting with the pears, dropping in bits of color as I went. My primary colors were New Gamboge, Quin. Gold, Thalo Blue, Cobalt Blue, Winsor Purple, and Quin. Burnt Scarlet. The background is almost pure paint using Thalo Blue, Winsor Purple and Cobalt Blue. The stems and distress marks were added last.

Fuchsia Splash
Posted by Judy Moore Mudd | Filed under Still Life
About the Painting:
Name: Fuchsia Splash
Medium: Watercolor on archival professional grade paper
Size: 9×9″
My Process:
I used Pebeo frisket to preserve the whites in the center of the flower and also the inside lines and along the edges of the petals. I used a wood skewer with a sharp point to “draw” the lines and dots in the center with frisket. Once the frisket dried, I painted the outer green areas first, softening the inner edges since I knew I would be coming back over them with fushia color later. Then I moved to the center of the flower, making a very dark color w/ Alizarin Crimson and Thalo Blue. I kept working along the perimeter changes from alizarin crimson to magenta and opera, softening some edges while keeping other hard. Once this dried, I removed the frisket, added muted yellows in the center and topping them with bright yellow. I softened the lines in the petals just using clear water, letting the existing color melt into the lines. I finished with some additional darks in the center for some form.
