Pepper and Leeks

About the Painting:

Medium: Watercolor on Arches 140# professional paper

Size: Approx. 8×10″

In my beginners class last week, I set up a still life for my students to paint. It was actually fairly large with a basket and numerous vegetables. These were sitting to the side of the basket and made a well designed painting all by themselves. In setting up a still life to paint, you need to have a good strong light source. In this case, because the room is so light from surrounding windows, I used a 500 watt bulb in a photographer’s lamp to get the strong shading needed for definition. Sadie Shitzu Puppy

An original painting, watercolor and gouache on Arches 140# professional paper.

Size: Approx. 7 1/4 x 5″

We had a Shitzu named Sadie.  She was a tiny thing–the runt of the litter.  She was sweet as she could be, but prissy and stubborn!  She’s been gone a few years but we still miss her.  This was when she was younger, but we kept her in a “puppy cut” even when she was fully grown so she always looked like a pup.

My process:  I started with her ears–at the top with Raw Sienna, Raw Umber and down to Peach Black at the bottom of her ears.  I moved to her eyes, layering again, to get a translucent quality to her eyes.  Her nose was always shiny, too, so I layered the paint, then used a wet brush to soften the top and bottom of her nose.  The rest is pretty self-explanatory, finished her fur on her back, then used Thalo Blue and Raw Sienna to put her shadows in–around her eyes and underneath her belly.  To finish, I used white gouache to make her long lashes and white fur, then added a little gray to the white to highlight her darker fur.  Here is a detail photo of her eyes:

About the Painting:

Name: Ripening

Medium: Watercolor on Arches 140# professional paper

Size: Approx. 5×7″

I love the red in these tomatoes.  I wish I could say I grew them, but I get tomatoes up at our local market and sit them in the window until they are good and ripe.

The tomatoes were painted with multiple layers of Quin. Gold, Vermillion, and Perm Rose.  The darkened areas were painted with Winsor Purple.  The shadows were painted with Cobalt Blue and Winsor Purple with touches of Vermillion.

It’s strawberry season in Kentucky and I couldn’t resist painting a few!

Follow the Leader

About the Painting:

Name: Follow the Leader

Medium:  Watercolor and gouache on Arches Watercolor Paper

Size: Approx. 5×7″

My process:  I started with the ducks, blending cerulean blue and alizarin crimson to get a mauve-gray color for the first duck, adding layers to get dark areas for shapes.    I used the same mixture for the 2nd duck.  Peach Black was used for the tail feathers and other dark areas.  The beaks and feet were painted with mixtures of Aureolin Yellow, Scarlet Lake and Alizarin Crimson.

In the background, I used Phthalo Blue, Aureolin Yellow, Winsor Purple and Cerulean Blue.  The foreground was Quin. Burnt Scarlet, Raw Sienna and Quin. Gold.   I scraped in the background to get lighter tree trunks and used dry brush strokes for the path roughness.  Shadows were Cobalt Violet.

Bertie and Ernie

About the Painting:

Name:  Bertie and Ernie

Medium: Watercolor and Gouache on Arches 140lb. paper

Size: Approx. 5×7″

I visited a farm a few weeks ago to do some plein aire painting.  There were several goats there, but these two goats were always next to each other.

My Process:  I used frisket on this painting to keep the whites pure and so I would have freedom in putting in the surrounding areas.  So, after the frisket dried, I poured the background colors, lifting off the fence and adding darks next to the goats for impact.  I then removed the frisket and began with very light shadow colors on the rear goat, gradually becoming darker to complete him. I move to the front goat and just painted the face until I was satisfied, moved to its shadow areas and completing fine touches to both of their faces.  The finished with the front grasses.

Paint colors used were: Thalo Blue, Winsor Green, Winsor Violet, Cobalt, New Gamboge, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Perm. Rose, and Perm Green.

Price: $40.00, including shipping within the United States.  Email me to purchase or for International Shipping rates!

Pair O’ Pear

About the Painting:

Name: Pair O’ Pear

Medium: Watercolor on Arches 140# paper

Size: 5×7″

My Process:  I love the shape of pears.  I think they remind me of people–their shape and tilt, seems like they are always in a conversation.  With these, I used the multiple glaze process starting with the pears, dropping in bits of color as I went.  My primary colors were New Gamboge, Quin. Gold, Thalo Blue, Cobalt Blue, Winsor Purple, and Quin. Burnt Scarlet.   The background is almost pure paint using Thalo Blue, Winsor Purple and Cobalt Blue.  The stems and distress marks were added last.
